Endosulfon, which has been in news these days, is
Explanation
Endosulfan is a persistent organochlorine pesticide and insecticide used extensively in agriculture to control pests like aphids and tea mosquito bugs [t1][t2][t4]. It is classified as a broad-spectrum organochlorine insecticide and acaricide [t3]. The chemical gained significant notoriety in India due to the 'Endosulfan tragedy' in Kerala, where aerial spraying over cashew plantations led to severe health issues, including birth defects, physical disabilities, and cancer [t4][t8]. Due to its high toxicity and status as a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP), it was listed under the Stockholm Convention for a global phase-out [t7][t8]. In 2011, the Supreme Court of India banned its production and use nationwide [t4]. It is neither a fertilizer, sulfa drug, nor an antibiotic, but a hazardous chemical pollutant that bioaccumulates in the environment [t3][t9].
