Explanation
The Haffkine Institute in Mumbai is historically renowned for its pioneering work in the production of the plague vaccine. Dr. Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine, a Russian scientist and student of Louis Pasteur, arrived in India in 1893 and initially worked on a cholera vaccine [t1][t4]. When a devastating plague epidemic broke out in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1896, the Governor invited him to develop a solution [t1][t3]. Dr. Haffkine successfully developed the anti-plague vaccine and famously tested its safety on himself on January 10, 1897 [t1][t5]. The laboratory he established for this purpose was formally renamed the Haffkine Institute in 1925 in his honor [t1][t2]. While the institute's modern commercial arm, Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation, produces various products including oral polio vaccines, the institute's primary historical legacy and fame are inextricably linked to conquering the 'black death' through the plague vaccine [t3][t5].
