Explanation
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was a landmark trade agreement that established a free-trade zone in North America. It was signed in 1992 and officially entered into force on January 1, 1994, among its three member nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico [2]. The primary objective of the agreement was to liberalize trade by reducing or eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers on goods such as textiles, automobiles, and agricultural products [2]. NAFTA also addressed intellectual property rights and established side agreements for labor and environmental standards. Although it significantly integrated the North American economy over two decades, it was eventually terminated on June 30, 2020, and replaced by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on July 1, 2020.
