Which one of the following provisions was NOT made in the Charter Act of 1833?

Your answer:  ·  Correct: D
Explanation

The Charter Act of 1833 abolished the East India Company’s commercial/trading functions and made it a purely administrative body [1]. It also redesignated the head of administration as the Governor‑General of India and centralized legislative authority in the Governor‑General in Council [1]. The Act furthermore provided for the addition of a professional “law member” to the Governor‑General’s council to advise on legislation [3]. However, it did not provide for an Indian to be appointed as that Law Member; Indians had no participation in the council then and the first Indian nominations to the Legislative Council occurred only in the 1860s (from 1862 onward) [4].
