The Badshah Nama (or Padshahnama) is the official chronicle of the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The most prominent author of this work was Abdul Hamid Lahori, a court historian who was commissioned by Shah Jahan to write the history of his reign in the style of Abul Fazl's Akbar Nama [1]. Lahori was specifically called from retirement in Patna to undertake this task. He completed the first two volumes of the work, covering the first twenty lunar years of Shah Jahan's rule (1627–1647) [2]. Due to the infirmities of old age, the task of chronicling the third decade was later handed over to his pupil, Muhammad Waris [1]. While other authors like Muhammad Amin Qazvini also wrote versions of the Padshahnama, Abdul Hamid Lahori's work remains the most celebrated official biography of the period [1].
