Lala Lajpat Rai was assaulted by police in a demonstration against the arrival of Simon Commission.

The Simon Commission was a British parliamentary commission that was sent to India in 1928 to discuss constitutional reforms and recommend further changes in the governance of India. However, the Commission did not have any Indian members and was widely seen as a symbol of British arrogance and insensitivity towards Indian aspirations for self-rule. In protest against the arrival of the Simon Commission, Lala Lajpat Rai led a peaceful demonstration in Lahore on October 30, 1928. During the demonstration, the police resorted to lathi charge and Lala Lajpat Rai was severely beaten. He succumbed to his injuries a few weeks later on November 17, 1928. The incident led to widespread outrage and became a rallying point for the Indian independence movement.
