Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, also known as the Accessible India Campaign, is a flagship nationwide campaign launched by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Launched on December 3, 2015, to coincide with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, its primary goal is to serve the differently-abled community (Divyangjan).
The campaign focuses on three main pillars to ensure universal accessibility: 1) Built Environment (making buildings and public spaces accessible), 2) Transportation System (airports, railway stations, and buses), and 3) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ecosystem (websites and public documents). This initiative fulfills India's obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.
