According to the Normal Lapse Rate, temperature in the troposphere decreases with increasing altitude at a rate of approximately 6.5°C per 1,000 meters. This occurs because the atmosphere is heated primarily from the Earth's surface upwards, and the air becomes thinner and less dense at higher altitudes, losing its capacity to retain heat. Consequently, Darjeeling is much cooler than Agra despite their similar latitudinal position.
