T. Malthus propounded one of the most famous theories, called ‘The Malthusian Theory’ which is related to
Explanation
Thomas Robert Malthus, an English economist and demographer, propounded the Malthusian Theory of Population in his 1798 work, An Essay on the Principle of Population. The theory suggests that while the human population grows at a geometric rate (1, 2, 4, 8, 16...), the food supply increases only at an arithmetic rate (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...).
Malthus argued that this imbalance would eventually lead to a "Malthusian catastrophe" where the population exceeds the food supply, resulting in famine, disease, or war. He proposed two types of checks to maintain balance: preventive checks (such as moral restraint and delayed marriage) and positive checks (such as natural disasters and conflict). Although his predictions were largely offset by technological advancements in agriculture, his work remains foundational in demography and human geography.
