The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) was signed to end the War of the Austrian Succession in Europe. Since the First Carnatic War (1744–1748) in India was a direct fallout of this European conflict between the British and the French, the treaty effectively brought the hostilities in India to an end as well. Under the terms of the treaty, Madras, which had been captured by the French forces under Admiral La Bourdonnais in 1746, was returned to the British. In exchange, the British restored the fortress of Louisbourg in North America to the French. Therefore, both statements 1 and 2 are correct.
