Explanation
Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur (1910–1992) was a legendary Hindustani classical vocalist from Karnataka, renowned for his mastery of the Khayal style.
He represented the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana, a prominent school of Hindustani music founded by Ustad Alladiya Khan in the late 19th century. Although Mansur initially trained under the Gwalior Gharana, he later became a disciple of Ustad Manji Khan and Ustad Bhurji Khan (sons of Ustad Alladiya Khan), which cemented his lifelong association with the Jaipur-Atrauli style.
The Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana is characterized by its complex and intricate melodic patterns, intellectual approach, and a vast repertoire of rare and compound ragas (aprachalit ragas). For his immense contributions to Indian classical music, Pandit Mansur was honored with all three Padma Awards: Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
