The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate change, Government of India has announced ‘Dolphin Day’ which will be celebrated on
Explanation
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) designated October 5 as National Dolphin Day to be celebrated annually. This decision was taken during the 67th meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) in March 2022.
The day aims to create awareness for the conservation of the Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica), which is India's National Aquatic Animal. October 5 was chosen because it was on this date in 2009 that the Gangetic Dolphin was formally declared the National Aquatic Animal of India. These dolphins act as indicators of the health of the river ecosystem. The government has also launched 'Project Dolphin' on the lines of Project Tiger to conserve this endangered species and its habitat.
