The Arctic Council is an intergovernmental forum established in 1996, comprising the eight Arctic countries: Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. Its mandate is to address issues faced by the Arctic region, including environmental protection, sustainable development, and scientific cooperation. The Council also includes six organizations representing Arctic Indigenous peoples as permanent participants. The Council meets biennially to discuss issues related to the Arctic region and make recommendations for policy and action.
