During the Gupta Empire, the Chinese traveller Fa-hien visited India during the reign of Chandra Gupta II. Fa-hien`s journey took place in the 5th century CE. He came to India to learn more about Buddhism and to gather scriptures to take back to China. He stayed in India for around 14 years, during which he visited various places of religious significance like Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Nalanda. Fa-hien`s accounts of his journey provide valuable insights into the social, cultural, and religious aspects of ancient India, specifically during the Gupta period. While Chandra Gupta II was ruling, India was experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural achievement, making it an attractive destination for travellers and scholars like Fa-hien.
