The term `Socialist` was brought into the Preamble of the Indian Constitution by the 42nd Amendment Act, 1976. The 42nd Amendment Act was passed during the period of emergency and brought about several changes to the Constitution of India. One of the most significant changes was the insertion of the words "socialist" and "secular" into the Preamble. The Preamble of the Constitution now reads, "We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic". The 42nd Amendment Act also made several other changes to the Constitution, including giving more powers to the central government, limiting judicial review, and making it difficult to amend certain provisions of the Constitution.
