After Subhash Chandra Bose came out of the Indian National Congress, he established the Forward Block as a new political party. The Forward Block was founded on May 3, 1939, with an aim to bring together all left-wing nationalists and those who were dissatisfied with the leadership of the Indian National Congress. Bose believed that the Congress` approach towards achieving independence was too passive and advocated for a more radical and militant approach. The Forward Block was meant to be a united front against British colonial rule. It attracted members from different regions, communities, and political ideologies. Bose became the president of the Forward Block and worked towards mobilizing support for the cause of independence.
