The Bhagirathi River originates from the Gangotri Glacier, which is located near Gomukh in the Uttarkashi district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Gomukh is the terminus or snout of the glacier, and it is from this point that the Bhagirathi River emerges. The glacier itself is fed by several peaks, including Mount Shivling and Thalay Sagar, both of which are part of the Gangotri Group of mountains in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Bhagirathi River is one of the two main headstreams of the Ganges River, the other being the Alaknanda River.
