Explanation
Cyclone 'Tauktae' was named by Myanmar [1]. The name 'Tauktae' (pronounced Tau’te) is a Burmese word meaning 'gecko', a highly vocal lizard . Tropical cyclones in the North Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, are named by the RSMC New Delhi based on a list contributed by 13 member countries of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones [2]. Myanmar is one of these member countries and contributed 'Tauktae' as part of the new list adopted in April 2020 [4]. Tauktae was a powerful tropical cyclone that formed in the Arabian Sea in May 2021, eventually making landfall in Gujarat as an extremely severe cyclonic storm . The naming system ensures clear communication and identification of storms across the region [2].
