During Bal Gangadhar Tilak`s imprisonment in 1908 by the British, he was sent to Mandalay. Mandalay is a city in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). The British authorities often used imprisonment as a means to suppress and control Indian freedom fighters during the colonial era. While options such as Andaman and Nicobar, Rangoon, and Singapore were also used as locations for imprisoning prominent Indian leaders, in this particular case, Tilak`s destination was Mandalay. It is important to note that Tilak`s imprisonment did not deter him from his nationalist activities and he continued his fight for Indian independence even while in Mandalay.
