Queen Victoria`s Proclamation of 1858 was a statement issued by the British Queen after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The proclamation declared that the British government would take over the governance of India from the East India Company and place it under the direct rule of the British Crown. It also promised to respect the rights of Indian princes and not to annex Indian states without just cause. However, the proclamation did not address the issue of regulating the East India Company`s trade with India.
