The Chittagong Armoury Raid, also known as the Chittagong uprising, was a significant event in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. It took place on April 18, 1930, in Chittagong, present-day Bangladesh.

Surya Sen, popularly known as Masterda, was the key organizer and leader of the raid. He was a revolutionary and a member of the Indian Republican Army (IRA), a revolutionary organization dedicated to achieving independence from British rule.

Under the leadership of Surya Sen, a group of revolutionary freedom fighters, mostly consisting of young revolutionaries, planned and executed the raid on the Chittagong Armoury. The objective of the raid was to capture the armory and use the weapons and ammunition to launch a larger uprising against British rule.

On the night of April 18, 1930, the group led by Surya Sen attacked the police armory in Chittagong. Despite facing heavy opposition from the British forces, they managed to seize the armory and hold it temporarily. The revolutionaries also hoisted the Indian national flag at the armory to symbolize their defiance against British rule.

However, the raid did not achieve its ultimate objective of sparking a larger uprising due to various factors, including the lack of widespread support and subsequent military crackdown by the British. Many of the participants in the raid were arrested or killed in subsequent encounters with the British forces.

The Chittagong Armoury Raid is considered a significant event in the history of the Indian independence movement. It showcased the bravery and determination of Indian revolutionaries and inspired others to join the struggle for independence.
