Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was associated as Secretary with Hindu Female School which later came to be known as Bethune Female School. He was a social reformer and educationist who played a key role in the upliftment of women`s education in India. The Bethune School was established in Kolkata in 1849 with the aim of providing education to Hindu girls. Vidyasagar served as the secretary of the school for several years and introduced several reforms to improve the quality of education provided to the girls. The school was later renamed as Bethune Female School in honor of its founder, John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune.
