During the reign of Jahangir, the first Englishman to appear in the Mughal Court was Captain William Hawkins. This marks an important milestone in the history of British relations with India. William Hawkins arrived in India in 1608 as the representative of the British East India Company. He sought to establish trade relations with the Mughal Empire. Hawkins presented himself at the court of Jahangir in 1609 and was granted an audience. Despite initial difficulties, Hawkins managed to negotiate a trade agreement between the English and the Mughals. This marked the beginning of a significant British presence in India, as well as the establishment of the British East India Company as a prominent trading entity in the region.
