The polestar, also known as Polaris, is a star that appears almost directly above the North Pole. Since the star appears fixed in the sky, it can be used as a navigational aid to find direction. In the Northern Hemisphere, if a person is facing the polestar, he or she will be facing North. Therefore, if the person in the desert wants to reach his village, which is situated 5 km east of his current position, he should walk in the direction facing the polestar, which would be North. After walking for 5 km in the North direction, he would have to take a right turn and walk for 5 km in the East direction to reach his village.
