In 1916, Mahatma Gandhi travelled to Champaran to inspire the peasants to struggle against the oppressive plantation system. Champaran is a district in Bihar, India. Gandhi`s visit to Champaran was a significant turning point in India`s freedom struggle as it marked his first successful experiment with satyagraha (nonviolent resistance) on a large scale. The peasants in Champaran were forced to grow indigo by the British landlords and were subjected to harsh conditions. Gandhi`s presence and support gave them the courage to fight against this unjust system. Through peaceful protests and negotiations, Gandhi and the peasants were able to bring about significant reforms, setting a precedent for future movements against oppression in India.
