After the defeat at Plassey, Sirajuddaulah, the Nawab of Bengal, was assassinated. Following his death, Mir Jafar was appointed as the new nawab. Mir Jafar was a trusted general of Sirajuddaulah who had switched sides during the Battle of Plassey and played a significant role in the defeat of the Nawab. As a reward for his betrayal, Mir Jafar was given the position of nawab by the British East India Company. This change in leadership marked the beginning of British control over Bengal. Mir Jafar`s reign as nawab was characterized by his collaboration with the British and his compliance with their policies, which greatly benefitted the British at the expense of the local population.
