Borobudur is a massive Buddhist monument located in Central Java, Indonesia. It was constructed between approximately 780 and 840 AD during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty [1]. Architecturally, it is described as an enormous stupa and a schematized representation of the cosmos or a mandala. The structure consists of nine stacked platforms—six square and three circular—topped by a central dome, and it is adorned with over 2,500 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. As a major pilgrimage site for Mahayana Buddhism, it guides the faithful through symbolic planes of consciousness toward enlightenment. While other options mention Hindu temples in Java or sites in India, Borobudur is specifically a Buddhist stupa complex from the 8th-9th century AD. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
