Explanation
In the 'Harshacharita', Banabhatta records that Bhaskara (also known as Bhaskaravarman) sent his ambassador, Hamsavega, to the court of Harshavardhana with numerous precious gifts to propose a diplomatic alliance. Bhaskaravarman was the most illustrious ruler of the Varman dynasty of Kamarupa, which corresponds to modern-day Assam. This dynasty was established by Pushyavarman in the 4th century CE. The alliance between Harsha and Bhaskaravarman was strategically significant, as it aimed to counter the power of Shashanka, the Gauda king. Historical records, including the accounts of the Chinese traveler Xuanzang and the Nidhanpur copper plate inscriptions, confirm Bhaskaravarman's status as a contemporary and close ally of Harsha. While the Haryanka dynasty ruled Magadha and the Nanda dynasty ruled North India in much earlier periods, the Varmans of Kamarupa were the prominent regional power in the northeast during Harsha's reign.
