Explanation
The Sarda river, also known as the Sharda or Saryu, originates in the Milam glacier of the Nepal Himalayas [1]. In its upper reaches, particularly before entering the Indo-Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh, it is known as the Kali or Mahakali river [3]. It flows along the Indo-Nepal border, where it serves as a natural boundary between Uttarakhand and Nepal [3]. The river descends from the mountains and enters the plains at Barmdeo Mandi in Nepal, widening above the Sarda Barrage; it is only below this point that it is primarily referred to as the Sarda [3]. Eventually, it flows southeastward into Uttar Pradesh and joins the Ghaghara river [3]. Other options like Bhagirathi and Pindar are part of the Alaknanda-Ganga system and are distinct from the Sarda.
