Till what age can a Judge of a High Court hold the office ?
Explanation
According to Article 217(1) of the Indian Constitution, a Judge of a High Court holds office until they attain the age of 62 years [c2][t1]. Originally, the Constitution fixed the retirement age at 60 years, but this was increased to 62 years by the 15th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1963 [c1][t6]. While there have been various proposals and Law Commission reports, such as the 114th Amendment Bill (2010), suggesting an increase to 65 years to bring parity with Supreme Court judges, these changes have not been enacted [t1][t6]. Consequently, the current constitutional provision remains 62 years [t2][t5]. A High Court judge may vacate their office earlier by resigning in writing to the President or through removal by the President on the recommendation of Parliament [c2][c3].
